The MAT program and its curriculum are designed to help career changers, retirees, and individuals in education fields with no or limited teaching experience master the art of teaching at the secondary (grades 5-12) level.

The program provides students the opportunity to pursue either an Iowa certification or non-certification track of study.

The non-certification track consists of a minimum of 42 quarter credit hours and is designed for professionals from all 50 states and abroad who desire a fundamental understanding of secondary teaching practices, but may not wish to become certified teachers at this time. This program is also designed for those individuals who would like to become certified teachers through the alternative certification route approved by their state. Kaplan University cannot recommended candidates outside of Iowa for licensure, but does have MAT coaches dedicated to helping students plan their own path to certification in their home state.The non-certification track is structured around courses designed to build a strong foundation in teaching and does not include fieldwork or a student teaching/internship experience. Enrollment in content area courses is also not required for completion of this track of the program.

The Iowa certification track consists of a minimum of 56 quarter credit hours and is designed for professionals able to conduct fieldwork and student teaching/internship requirements in an Iowa public school. Students who successfully complete the Iowa certification track of the MAT program will be recommended to the Iowa Department of Education for a teaching license. The Iowa certification track is approved by the Iowa State Board of Education and offers core and certification courses, as well as required fieldwork assignments and a supervised student teaching or year-long internship experience. In addition, students take elective courses geared toward their expertise in specific content areas. Students pursuing the Iowa certification track MUST be Iowa residents or able to complete the fieldwork and student teaching/internship requirements in the state of Iowa.

M.S in Accounting

This graduate-level degree is designed to prepare students with the necessary critical thinking and problem-solving skills to pursue mid- to senior-level positions in the field of accounting.† The curriculum is designed to enrich skills in auditing, taxation, cost accounting, and financial accounting while providing students the opportunity to choose elective courses to meet their specific interests and goals. Prepare to sit for various certification examinations, including the Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Internal Auditor (CIA®), and Certified Management Accountant (CMA®) examinations.§

M.S in Education (For Practicing Teachers K-12)

The Master of Science in Education (MSE) program and its curriculum are designed to provide experienced K-12 educators, both practicing and nonpracticing, with the knowledge and experience to meet nationally recognized standards. This graduate-level program is NOT an introductory program to teaching. It has been specifically created for experienced educators who want to continue on their journey as highly effective teachers and build personal and professional skills. It is also intended for individuals who want to pursue career advancement in areas such as leadership, professional development, or mentoring.*

All coursework contains job-embedded assignments and, therefore, requires candidates
to teach a consistent group of learners. Candidates are taught to consider how to most effectively promote student learning and development and school achievement, and demonstrate their understanding of the program’s four knowledge goals: diverse learners, academic content and pedagogy, assessment, and professional responsibilities and relationships. The program is also designed to help candidates become proficient in five program competencies (outcomes), which are based upon national and professional standards for practicing teachers.

Candidates will choose to focus their studies in one of nine emphasis areas*: Teaching Literacy and Language—Grades K–6; Teaching Literacy and Language—Grades 6–12; Teaching with Technology; Teaching Students with Special Needs; Teaching Mathematics—Grades K–5; Teaching Mathematics—Grades 6–8; Teaching Mathematics—Grades 9–12; Teaching Science—Grades K–6; and Teaching Science—Grades 6–12.
